General Symbology

  • Agencies

    Agency Icon

Each agency has its own marker on the map, represented by this blue marker.

  • Inactive Agencies

    Inactive Agency Icon

Sometimes an agency's crime data does not get updated as quickly as others. If the agency's crime data is no longer as current as with some other agencies, this icon will appear. In order to see data for that agency, you must change the date range that you're viewing to go back in time to at least the last date data was sent to our site.

  • Incidents

Mini Incident Icon Large Incident Icon

Every crime has a symbol associted with it, and depending on your preference you can use a tiny icon, or a larger icon. See the list below for which colors and symbols map to which Crime Types.

  • Incident Clusters

Mini Incident Cluster Icon Large Incident Cluster Icon

If there is a large concentration of crimes within a very small area the icons will be clustered, much the way agency icons are clustered when you zoom out. The number inside this incident cluster icon represents the number of crimes within that small location. Click the icon to zoom into hidden incidents.

What is Clustering

Clustering is a fancy way of abstracting many intersecting points on a map into one single point.

Example: If two crimes occur right across the street from one another, when you zoom out those incidents will overlap (visually) at some point. When the two symbols overlap it is difficult to tell that there are two crimes in that area. Clustering collapses both symbols into one symbol and tells you how many symbols within the cluster have been collapsed. This helps our map to look less cluttered and more readable. Of course, you can turn off clustering any time you like.

The table below shows two images one with our miniature incident icon, and another with our large icons. Click the buttons below each image to toggle the different images to see what it the effect of clustering does to our incident map.

Crime Type Symbology

Below you will find definitions and explanations of the symbology (icons) we use for each of the Crime Types. It is common for two agencies to have a similar definition for the same Crime Type, so in order to remain consistent for all the data we have (and reduce the amount of different Crime Types that we manage), we map our client's Crime Types as to the following symbols:
